Dorset Theatre Festival, THIRST - “Sublime” - “A Stunningly offered story you should want to go see for the strength of its humanity” ”

TELLY HALKIAS - BRATTLEBORO REFORMER

On his craft

“I believe in stories that resonate beyond the theatre’s door, that add ideas to the national conversation. I believe in the playwright as a thinker travelling in the direction of their fear.”—Ronán Noone

“I believe in playing with a myriad of elements to find the right way to tell a good story; a necessary story that tells us who we are, where we have been, and where we are going.—Ronán Noone

Teaching

I am an Assistant (adj) Professor of English at Boston University where I teach at Boston Playwrights’ Theatre in the MFA program in Playwriting. I am also on the writing faculty for Writing, Film & Media Arts at Walnut Hill School for the Arts.

As a teacher, I guide student writers to search for the beating heart in their work, to critique with care, to rewrite using the pen as a scalpel, and to read and reread all the plays, screenplays, and TV pilots they can get their hands on.

TALKS AND LECTURES

Published Essay: April 2024

Thirst: My Journey into O’Neill’s Long Day’s Journey into Night

New Hibernia Review/ Iris Éireannach Nua: A Quarterly Record of Irish Studies presents plainly argued scholarship on all aspects of Irish civilization. It seeks to address a readership of both professional scholars and educated readers as it examines, without political agenda, the cultures of the whole of Ireland. All disciplines are represented in the pages of New Hibernia Review; literary studies and history predominate. In additional to fully annotated scholarly articles, the journal also presents new Irish poetry and book reviews, as well as occasional memoirs and informal essays.

April - WBGH : The Culture Show with Jared Bowen

From there playwright Ronán Noone shows us how the other half lives–or rather works, sweats and toils to achieve the American dream. In his play “Thirst,” he takes us into the room where Eugene O'Neill's “Long Day’s Journey Into Night,” didn’t happen. Focusing on the hired help servicing the Tyrone Family. Ronan Noone joins us to talk about examining the Irish-immigrant experience, the perils of family loyalties and the push and pull of despair and hope.

THIRST - a Journey into Long Day’s Journey into Night

While Long Day's Journey into Night is going on in the living room - what is happening in the kitchen? Thirst is the play that takes place in the kitchen of Monte Cristo Cottage during that fateful day in August, 1912. By using an upstairs/downstairs perspective, it opens a conversation with Eugene O’Neill’s classic family drama. Ronán Noone (Boston University), author of Thirst, will discuss the process of creating the play while illustrating how the themes of deracination and immigration are considered essential to our understanding of O'Neill's work.
